After some extended shore leave, I've just resumed my mid-war career and I've noticed that the Watch Officer is performing less than efficiently.
For a start, when issuing deck gun and flak orders (short range, fire at will etc..) there's a huge delay before he repeats my order. Secondly, and perhaps most irritating... whenever I surface, he doesn't join the watch crew... he just sits in the bow quarters and enjoys a smoke! Does anyone know of a way to improve his AI and/or automatically get him on deck with the rest of the watch crew?

I'm not sure what is the problem with him repeating your orders.
Unfortunatley, you must always put the WO on the bridge manually after surfacing. There is nothing that can be done about this.

I had thought that their experience level would effect their speed and performance. Both the WO and the gun crews have been with me since I started the career... they're about as good as they can get and have the required qualifications!
I can just about cope with the WO staying in his bunk when we surface, but the delayed orders allows closing aircraft to drop their bombs before the crew open fires.

Try setting your orders for the flak gunners to fire to whatever you set it to when you leave port (they don;t have to be on station when you issue the command then when aircraft are sighted got to F7 select AA's and they will do it automatically.

I know what you mean about the delay - the WO can get occupied - if he spots a ship or two (especially in a convoy) he will be distracted for a bit and not respond - range estimates will be slow, and you will have to click a bunch of times. It's a bug I think.
