Default Question about SH3gen and its use

I just recently dowloaded and installed SH3gen which works great. It adds new information to the captains log and puts little id markers all over the map. On a new mission, once I'm out of port in deep water, like a captain opening and reading his mission orders, I'll bring up SH3gen and obtain this new intelligence data.

Here is my question and I'd like to receive some useful comments on this. What specific information do you find is most useful in this extra interlligence information? And how do you use this information and bennefit from it?

Depending on what level of intel you decide to have - I find I mainly use the map markings to locate minefields and subnets
Knowing whats in your patrol area is good too - if Im out in the AL sector and there is the Illustrious marked on the map close by I know I will have to be more aware of air contacts
Much the same with taskfoce and ASW intel
Also great if you want to go harbour raiding to have a rough idea if its gonna be worthwhile - nothing like getting a report there will be a couple of transports in a certain harbour and finding them

I find the "Standing orders" part of Sh3Gen interesting. It enhances my gaming experience and it gives a sense of being part of something more than a submarine crew, it gives the senese of being part of a war.

The map updates can be good to get a general idea of where to find targets and what places to avoid. And as previously mentioned; find out if there are any ports worth the risk, time, fuel and torpedoes.

Wooly covered it really, not much else to be said. As it is I pass by Scapa every time I swing around the UK, or at least I am currently as it's early in the war and ASDIC is yet to make an appearance.

The standing orders part is something that I am very proud to have in the program now. It was quite a long story from discovering the "U-Boaters guide" (an online ressource for players of AOTD), obtaining Hans's permission to use them (though nobody knew where he was), finding an english speaker with the necessary knowledge who would help me extend them to cover the whole war (Brad), having them translated to German (Georg) and last not least integrating them into the program. I am glad to hear you said "it gives sense of being part of a war", because it was exactly this kind of thing I was trying to do with it.

Question:

The actual mission generated by SH3 Gen, I've never actually gone about trying to complete it. Do you get renown for it if you manage to somehow complete the often vauge orders, or is it really just for the immersion factor?

No there is no mission
Its purely there to give you intel based on your campaign layers
What you choose to do with that intel is up to you as is the strength of information given
Purely for immersion , and no good uboat Kpt would have left port without any intel he could have gained
And if you have many save games and rerun SH3gen each time its just like receiving radio contacts

(I think Phat Boy means the mission objectives from version 0.7 upwards.)

There is no direct renown for fulfilling or not fulfilling the missions, unfortunately it is not possible. All the checks that Silent Hunter makes before it assigns prestige are hard coded, as far as I know.

However, you could say that whenever you are given a mission it means that Sh3Gen has established that the time is right for doing it, because for every mission there has to be a trigger. You can go where you are told, there will probably be a higher chance for valuable targets, you can sink them and the additional prestige will make your mission a success.

The system works as follows:

Whenever a mission objectives' required condition is flfilled, Sh3Gen will add it to the list of possible mission (this can get pretty long). In a second step I take one mission from every mission type and put them into another list (this is to have about the same frequency for every mission type). At the end a single mission is chosen from this list, and this is the one that you will see at the beginning of your mission update.

So, yes, immersion only, but there might be more to it.
