Default Juicy targets

I am new to this game and am currently on my 4th patrol in the 7th flotilla. So far I have been keeping myself busy sinking cargo ships and merchants.

I am wondering whether there are any "hot" spots where I can expect to find illustriuos British warships such as battleships or carriers? It gets kind of old attacking only merchants after a while...

Thanks

Try searching for some "spoiler" lists which will tell you location of major enemy capital ships in ports.

You need to find task forces to get the capital ships, or find them when they are moored somewhere. The following website lists the locations of both, down towards the bottom of the page.

Go to Gibraltar - in th early war, task forces pass through there all the time. You can also intercept them on a North south route - they run from Lock Ewe around ireland, then straight south past spain, finally turning into the narrows at gibraltar. It's an easy intercept there. The other place to catch them is in the mediterranean. They pass through a narrows (between the east and west arms of the med) and you can nail them there. The other place is really early in the war (39, 40) right north of Lock Ewe. They come from the east - like in norway, and they arrive at lock ewe. You can nail them there. The other ones seem more random - you just have to get lucky. Always keep _your_ ear on the hydrophone. by the time your SO detects a TF, it will be too late to make a good intercept because they move so fast. The best is to draw a line between several radio reports of their position and make an accurate estimate of their course. Then just wait on the hydrophone and line up a perfect attack. Finally, don't get greedy - even if there's two KGVs in the task force, hold yer wad - your best chance is to put all four torpedoes into one of them. The worst thing is hitting both, but not slowing either down. Heartbreaking when that happens.

Welcome to the forum, Herr Kaleun

If you're into juicy targets, apart from AM51, there is an add-on to SH3 for you. Check it out.

http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=47405

It puts all the targets on the map, something like an intelligence report (the accuracy of the report can be fine tuned).

I couldn't imagine SH3 without it.

Second what Keelbuster said. I prefer the Atlantic approach to Gibraltar (west of the narrows), because it's easier to get into a good position since it funnels traffic into a smaller area of water. I think it pays to creep in towards the Straits, stay submerged in the deep water, and listen at All Stop. Come up at night to recharge and get a blow, then down again to listen.

And what else is heartbreaking is finally getting a good report from sonar, racing into position just in time, and putting up the scope just in time to discover that you can't see a bl**dy thing in the rain/fog/dark. Ok, I confess. I F-12'd and flew over to see what I was missing (1 Illustrious, 1 KGV, at least 1 Dido and 1 Fiji). >SOB<

I hate that so much. The other day I set up a TF intercept. By the time they showed up, it was rain/heavy fog. I used the hydrophone to get as close as possible. All of the sudden, what looms out of the fog? KG. I freak, all back emergency, ruddern amidships, scramble to open torpedo tubes, then fire frantically at the beast. Too close (<200m) and all bounce off. I almost got run over by the bastard. Also, I broke down and used F12 to find out what else was in the convoy....another KG. 2xKG. Sick.

Seriously, I need an F-12 Step Program. ("Hi, I'm Herr Kaleun, and I'm an F-12er" ... "Hi, Herr Kaleun" ...)

Yea. Indeed. Thing is, I _love_ the screencaps. I take hundreds.
For my current career, I've been sticking to the rule that I'm verbotten to use F12 to acquire any information for attack, navigation, or evasion. If I'm safely silent running away and I want to see a burning cruiser slowly sink, then I'll F12 and zoom over to the cruiser and try to ignore (i.e. turn away) from any escorts that are hunting me so that I don't spoil the challenge. It's a bit messy, but sometimes I just have to see them sink. Especially with sinking dynamics as implemented in Tonnage War. It's CRAZY.

Yeah, it's definitely the screenshots for me, too. I've got hundreds of pictures of sunset. Of fireballs engulfing a merchant. It's become compulsive behavior - they all look the same after a few days and I delete all or almost all of them. Then start another patrol and do it all again. I think my captain needs a new name (Bronica, Leica, etc.).

Har. It's bad - I forget to delete them. The other day I had to zip my older screenshots because I couldn't find the new ones, and even still the zip was ~500mb.
