Default Star Shells

Can someone tell me the point of star shells?

Why light up the sky at night and let everyone know you are there?

The only thing i can think of is to fire a couple of these if you want to play around with some enemy warships.

Of course, in the game system itself they're mostly used by Allied warships to look for you. Not really sure why they were included in the U-Boats deck gun shell inventory. Maybe just to briefly entertain the crew on those slow nights.

Yeah!

Some firework on slow nights to enjoy the crew. I know there is lack on women and beer on my boat, but if star shells works for my crew, i am happy for them.

I knocked up a little mission where your u-boat escorts a pair of German Commerce raiders, I ran ahead of the 2 ships after spotting a convoy approaching out of the darkness and when I got in range fired a star shell to light up the enemy ships, The Raiders then opened fire until the starshell burned out and re-engaged as soon as I illuminated the targets again so I guess they have atleast one use.

Actually, starshells are useful for me. If I am doing a surface gun attack on a target I like to fire a few rounds of SS in the approximate bearing of the target. More often than not the enemy is easier to see thus making it easier to aim your deck gun.

You can use them in close distance with small ships (tug boats etc.)

Would be a nice addition to a SH3 movie

I use them for ranging rounds before firing ap or he. I ought to replace them with ap,though.

We are near a such of realism that when we deep charged we could see chairs moves around the room ,pictures falling from the walls, windows explosion..... just kidding...but i mean that it's almost impossible to reach the 100% realism .
