Did a clean SH3 reinstall having cleared all traces of old files etc from drive.
This was probably my third or forth clean install. When starting SH3, the protection system checks the disk and announces: 'Application module SH3EXE was modified. It may be damaged or infected byvirus. Reinstall application'. I have removed and reinstalled another four more times, all totally clean installs. Even tried removing Star Force drivers - no good. Is there a limit to the number of SH3 install's allowed??? What can I do? Any ideas folks. I'm stuck on the beach and helpless. Any assistance much appreciated. |

Did you check your program files for UBISOFT? Uninstalling the game will not remove that folder. you must delete it, before reinstalling the game.

Whenever I try to reinstall, it seems to take a few tries. I always end up with my old files and it seems like a good install/update when im done.

Stripped out Ubisoft folder (including other UBI games) Checked for any UBI references etc. Another clean install - same problem. Have tried before and after adding patch 1.4b. Never got as far as adding any mods. SH3 will start one time only at installation via SH3 config utility - disc checks and passes. All further attempts to open via config utility (both in game on hard drive and disc) fail - same message. SH3 Mission Editor does however pass disc check and opens every time. The only thing I have not done is a system restore but so much has now been removed, so many attempts to install and a disc defrag, I doubt I will get back to where I was. Ironical as this whole mess was caused by attempting a clean install with my final choice of mods and latest sh3comander. Any other ideas would be most welcome. Thanks U2222 |

Hi U222: I don't know how computer literate you are, but your registry contains information about the game. However, NEVER use a registry cleaner. Learn how to edit your registry. If you don't know how, then post a reply and I will tell you what to do, because information on Silent Hunter III is still in there. Robert.

This of course prompted entry of disc key etc on install but still got the same failure at start up disc check. I reinstalled game a number of times at original purchase time due to problems with graphic's months ago. Solved this and game always ran well until this clean install - maybe 5th or 6th install in total. Have now thrown the problem at Ubisoft. I'll wait and see what they have to say?? I do keep wondering if it's due to the number of reinstalls or something else on my drive (not mentioned in this thread) telling the install programme that a previous installation existed or was modded. Thanks for suggestions and help Will update with a solution if I ever get one. U2222 |

Resolved problem
I got the following advice from star force..... and it works!!! Star force say that the problem is not caused by them but they are aware of it and do have a work around available to solve it. What they do not say is that after clean install, LOAD UPGRADE DRIVER FIRST. After activation of the 'updatemodule' you will be unable to upgrade to patch v1.4b. I copied the original SH3.exe to a spare folder - just in case I need it again. Below is a copy of Star Force advise. This message means that the module was modified by some other process, which is not related to the protection system. We have some kind of workaround for that issue. You should use it only in case you are sure that there are no viruses on your computer. Here is a detailed instruction of what you should do. First of all you should learn the path to the game: right-click on the icon of the game, select Properties -> Shortcut -> Target. It should be like this, for example: "C:\Program Files\Company name\Product title\game.exe". Here "game.exe" is the name of executable file & "C:\Program files\Company name\Product title" is the folder with the game. Second, you should unpack UpdateModule.exe from UpdateModule.ZIP to the folder with the game (Download UpdateModule.ZIP from here: http://help.starforce.ru/tmp/UpdateModule.zip). Then press Start -> Run... and type manually "cmd" (here and below you should type the commands without quotation marks). Type in, command by command: "cd <folder with the game>" (in my example it will be "cd C:\Program Files\Company name\Product title") "updatemodule <name of the game's executable> <any name of executable, other from the original>" (my example: "updatemodule game.exe game2.exe") "copy <name of executable, other from the original> <name of the game's executable> /y" (my example: "copy game2.exe game.exe /y") "del <name of executable, other from the original>" (my example: "del game2.exe") "exit" Try running the game now. Below is what I typed in cmd to resolve the problem: Press enter after each line cmd cd\program files\ubisoft\silenthunterIII (note III is capital i) updatemodule sh3.exe sh3x.exe copy sh3x.exe sh3,exe/y del sh3x.exe exit Hope this helps anybody else who ends up in my position. I'm back in, joy!!!!! Thanks again to those who offered help - that's what this forum is all about Regards U2222 |

One thing in your post concerns me. You say you cannot patch to 1.4b after using this update utility?
Is that correct? EDIT: I followed the course of directions above and its working again. Just apply the 1.4b patch first before the update from Starforce.
