Default Bullying Captain

This Court Martial is going on at the moment: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...re/4598850.stm.

I don't condone abuse or bullying, but the charges are going back to 1998-1999 - why wait so long to complain, or is someone after a few bucks in our wonderful new UK compensation culture?

Na. It can take this long for the navy to process this sort of case. It just wasn't considered a priority

I don't personally doubt that the guy shoted and and technically bullied some members of the crew, that's some people's style - generally known as 'old school' these days.

I still maintain that this has only reached this stage because of compensation culture.

i dunno... i've heard that the Brit sub Captains are a rougher bunch than US sub Captains... it's just their way... a matter of course in the RN...

now my opinion.. and all it is, is my opinion...

if indeed, we are to believe that the meek shall inherit the earth... and seeing as we do appear to live in a more mild mannered society... at least it would seem so in the eyes of those making the laws of the land in recent times...

... then, by all means, you would have to find this Captain GUILTY as charged...

but...

if there is a place where the line is held by those in command... and those in command are expected to be made of sterner stuff... and expected to assume the responsibility of commanding of a nuclear powered vessel... and expected to carry out their mission as tasked, where failure and or lack of resolve and responsibility can have devastating effects...

... if we are to assume that a Captain is a master of his ship... and the crew, especially those of officer and petty officer experience, are to be of the type of which individual strength and resolve would appear to be a prerequisite... in order to keep the meek protected...

... then by all means, i would have to find this Captain NOT GUILTY as charged.

personally, i find it most unsettling to have a person in a responsible position aboard a nuclear sub who would be brought to tears by the dressing down of a superior officer... no matter how bad it was...

ahhhh... maybe i'm just an extinct remnant from an age long past...

and me not being privy to all the facts can only voice an unqualified opinion to what is surely 'news fit for public consumption'...

If the abuse is irrational, frequent and humiliating...it doesn't matter how tough it is, it does ware you down eventually.

The guy wasn't cracking up in front of the crew. He was carrying on with the watch, internalising the anger and when in the relative privacy of his cabin - he had to release it. There are only a few ways people release that sort of tension...they go for a walk (impossible on a sub), they do exercise (almost impossible on a sub), they break something (not an option on a sub) or they cry.

My experience with military leaders who shout and are abusive is that they are unsure of themselves and the position they hold and start to come apart under pressure. Better to get rid of them.
