& one costal merchant sunk for 2,000 tons? The ships zig zag on this sub sim more then any other ive played

They only zig zag if they spot you. If you sneak up on them, they keep a straight course.

Another trick is to watch you detection meter (if you use it). If it is a neutral ship you are tracking, the detection meter does not change color when you are within the ship's viewing distance, only if it is an enemy ship. That way you do not particulary have to check the flag versus knowing it's an Allied ship.
