Default Gimmie, gimme! My luxury yacht!!!

I just cant wait for my luxury yacht! Er, I mean Gato boat! I have been reading the Fleet Type Submarine manual (url: http://www.maritime.org/fleetsub/ ) and from what I have gathered the US Navy is where its at as far as a submariner is concerned! All this time I have been spending in the Kreigsmarine sweating below decks while in the US Navy I could have just turned on the air conditioning! Check it out: http://www.maritime.org/fleetsub/app...es/figa-11.htm They even had central air distrubution just like a modern house: http://www.maritime.org/fleetsub/ref...t/fig18-01.htm

And to really rub it in they also have a refrigerator and an ice cream machine: http://maritime.org/fleetsub/refrig/chap7.htm#fig7-23

And for all you Kaleuns out there the Captian of a US sub not only has his own bunk, but also a cabin with a door. No flimsy curtains there!

Man oh man, if the average ubootman knew about this there would have been mass mutiny for sure! :rotfl:

Yep, exactly right. I see alot of posts about US boats in the Pacific, and I get the sense that many people envision life aboard these boats to be like that depicted in Das Boot. Far from it. Showers, ice cream, fryers, freezers, fresh water distilling (Kleinschmidt? still), fresh baked bread, pies and pastries, and on and on.

The s-boats were much more like the German boats, but the fleet boats were a (half) world away

Yes. I can't remember which class of boats was the first to get it but eventually all fleet boats were upgraded to have it.

And the food must have indeed been the best in the Navy - every submariner who's authored a book praises it as such.
