Default Effectiveness of Variously equipment

Are sonar, radar, and sonar decoys worth it? I hear that sonar and radar do nothing but attract DDs and decoys are a waste of time.

Sonars, no, unless you find yourself chasing ships in the fog, wind and rain at night. The 250 pts. you spend just aren't worth it.

decoys: definitely worth it. I have evaded a number of talented escort groups with them. With savvy use of depth and direction changes, of course!

Haven't much used sonar except in bad visibility or in rough weather, when just can't get distance properly. And yes, it might attract warships, so hydrophone check of the surroundings is recommended and no, you don't want to use it when attacking a convoy
Radar is kinda mixed bag. It does reveal you, especially late at war but can be useful in fog and rain and in safe areas (= outside planes' range). Can't use it in storms but no one is forcing to use it anyway but I'd say get it, just in case.
Decoys you'll definitely miss if you don't have them. Must purchase.

Yea...no doubt about the Decoy are worth the renown....

Quite a funny story actually regarding the "Bold"....

It was Hitlers idea back in 1943, while having a meeting with Dönits, that he wanted a kind of torpedo who would explode just below the surface and make a lot of bubbles and leave a massive oil spill....Dönits didn't like the thought of this countermessaure taking place in the torpedo tubes, and as such devised a plan for a seperate launch system to deploy the chemical Kobold or "Bold" on the casing of the u-boat.

At first it was extremely succesful and fooled a lot of sub-hunters, until a captured german sailor was fooled to talk about the "Bold". After that the effect was smaller since the sub-hunters now new about the "Bold", but still it fooled people....

End of history lesson today kids
