Spontaneous combustion

I am playing a campaign, Flotilla I, June 1940, IUB is the only patch, 100% realism. When I am chugging along in time compression I suddenly find my sub damaged or sunk. This happens near the English coast. I can speculate that I am being attacked by aircraft but there is no warning and after the attack no aircraft is visible (already gone?).

Can somebody tell me why I am getting attacked while in time compression and what I can do about it (no wise comments about don't use TC - play time is limited and I need to get to the good parts

)
