Default WEPS OFFICER "SOLUTION"

Let's say I 'target" a T-2 in a convoy (lock on it) and ask WEPS to "plot solution on map"...what do I get (eg, I dont seem to get a lot of info...just a time [eg, 3:06 or some such] which I cannot relate to anything specific. What am I missing? Seems like WEPS should recommend course/speed to intercept target at CPA with mimimum gyro angle for the best solution and give me the time to intercept a current (or recommended alternate) course and speed. I know one can do this with manual geometry....and the TDC should show this on the data display...however, I do not find that info available. Should I?

While your asking for all that other information give him your Captains hat grab a mop and start swabbing the deck!?!?!?!

Just kidding...

Actually in out of box version of the TDC there was a little green line from that time you see to your u-boat. the line show the course the torpedo would take as well as the spread angle if you send a salvo. I'm almost 100% sure the time is the time the torpedo would take to get to its target. The WO also sets all those dials you see to what he thinks are the best settings.

All that other stuff your asking for is what you like best course to the target. Well, as captain, should figure out. I forgot the line in the movie u-571 but the Chief warrent officer told Matthew something to the affect of as a Captain don't tell your crew you think know something. TELL them you know.

"We're all gonna die, men!"

Sorry, I couldn't resist....

Why dont WEPS (or more likely NAV) recommend a course and speed based on inputs for ideal intercept? Captain accepts, rejects or modifies...like in real life.

Yeah, I can see that. I guess the WO would plot a solution or at least get the range, bearing and heading of the target. He could give it to the NO who would plot a intercept course who then can give it to the Helmsman who would steer the boat in that direction.

I think the developers decided that it would make the game too automated if you got all that info. But I'm just guessing.

From my experience...that's the way its done in real life. Of course...in SHIII we have the luxury of pausing the sim while working out the geometry...a luxury that simply does NOT exist in real life (and death) situations. I guess the positives of each result in a zero sum...although I,m sure in real life the CO would have gladly traded doing everything (including cleaning the bilges solo) of the ability to "pause" an attack problem to allow for introspective contemplation and analysis. I know in my qual problem I sure would have!

1)Don't use pause...

2)Do the calculations in realtime.

In all actuality, it should not be that difficult. Shooting a torpedo is simple elementary geometry, not differential calculus...

If you guys think that the WE is accurate, you have not yet observed my shooting.

I failed at geometry

DAMN! DAMN! DAMN!

This is what my 10th grade Geometry teacher was talking about when she told me I'd need to know this someday!!
