Default Task Forces in 1942?

It's February 7th, 1942 and I just ran into a task force with two King George BB's midway between Ireland and Spain (BE65) steaming due south. It was my understanding that convoys with large capital ships ends in late 1941. I have patch 1.4b and nothing else other than a few tool mods. Am I mistaken?

Oh, and I'm not complaining of course. Just surprised.

Eh? Task forces sail around for the whole war. Not often, but they sure do.

I set all forward tubes for keel shots. Then fired two at the first BB at 2000 meters. The first torpedo prematurely detonated (I hate it when that happens) and the second one slid under just forward of the superstructure and destroyed the ship.

The second two were fired as the second ship sailed at 14 knots around the first ship bringing it right across my bow at about 700 meters. One amidships and the second aimed at the rear guns...it went dead in the water and sank by the stern.

This is my second campaign and I never ran into a single task force in the first (but received lots of radio reports early on even though they were far away). I thought I read somewhere that the task forces after 1941 would only consist of light cruisers and escort carriers.

Now that I think of it, I've never seen an auxiliary cruiser in this or the first campaign. Where are they?

I've seen a aux criuser in a merchant convoy. Many task forces I find now ('43) are just 3 DDs travelling together . Maybe I should fire 1 torp at each of them and tell bdu I destroyed a task force :hmm:

Yep...they have a soft spot right below the forward wall of the main superstructure. But it has to be a keel shot. Impacts usually take 3, sometimes 4. I set my depth at 9.25 meters for the KG and Revenge and 11 for a Nelson. Even though the depth for a Nelson is 10.7, if you set it any deeper, it will pass right under the ship. By the way, sea state doesn't seem to affect the big boys at all.

Never quite understud the keels shoot's. I tried and when the torpedo explodes below the ship, never does enought damage to destroy the ship.

Maybe you put the eel to swim to deep? 0.5m below the keel should do the trick on calm seas. But on high winds, the ship goes up and down on the waves, so I prefer 0.7-1m under the keel then.
