Default A little off topic.....

Is anyone using wireless ADSL routers & playing SH3 online,
if so what type? What are the disadvantages compared to conventional wired routers.

I am about to network two computers in my house both sharing internet connection, the connection is downstairs but both pcs are in separate rooms upstairs, one for wifes bussiness, one for general use & gaming.

Any help/advice from everyone in the community before purchasing would be appreciated, thanks.

I haven't played SHIII online, as I'm not really into co-op play; but I did play SHII/DC online for a while, and at first I tried a wireless. I couldn't get it to work at all (apparently too much metal and concrete in the house's structure), so I finally bought a 50' cable and used the wired version. It worked fine for surfing the 'net, but I still couldn't play online. It seems my D-Link had security issues that I couldn't get around (I had to hook it to my landlady's PC, so I couldn't just shut it off from mine).

I'm told the Linksys router lets you fiddle with the security features more easily, so you might want to check into some different models before you buy. Of course if it's hooked to your computer you can just disable it when you play, but your family might not take too kindly to that option.

On the other hand, a friend of mine's kids have one at their place and have no problems I'm aware of. I'll try to find out what kind they use.

I've got a Microsoft wireless router. It's childishly easy to set up if you are running Windows. It seems reasonably secure, although I have invested in the excellent Alpha Shield harware firewall for better security.

I don't play SHIII online, but I do play a lot of other stuff. Unless Ivo Shandor (the architect who designed the ghost-magnet apartment building in the movie "Ghostbusters") has built your home, a wireless router is a really good, cheap networking investment.

Here's the script bit from Ghostbusters regarding the grim Mr. Shandor:

SPENGLER

Ivo Shandor, I saw his name in Tobin's
SPIRIT GUIDE. He started a secret society
in 1920.

VENKMAN
(putting it all together)
Let me guess -- Gozer Worshippers.

SPENGLER
Yes. After the First World War Shandor
decided that society was too sick to
survive. And he wasn't alone. He had close
to a thousand followers when he died. They
conducted rituals, bizarre rituals, intended
to bring about the end of the world.
