Default Destroyer/Battleship Command

Alot of people have not only wanted some kind of destroyer expansion pack but also one that includes battleships. While i agree it would be interesting, as it stands the surface combat in the SH3 engine is rather boring. Right now surface combat is merely an excercise in painting the enemy ship black....yup painting it black with those textures that represent a punctured hull. In order for the surface combat to be more exciting it would need some dynamic damage or some greater level of damage feedback. While some may argue that some there is dynamic damaging such as lifeboats been destroyable and other tidbits of superficial damage, it can never compare the the visual splendour of a torpedo inpact. The only interesting aspect of surface combat would be that of anti-submarine warefare.

AAW would be interesting if only they fixed the AA model. As it stands now, attacking aircraft have an even money chance of being blown out of the sky on their first run against a submarine. Against platforms that routinely mount ten times the AAW firepower... it would be ugly.

As awsome as it would be to see your armada of ships battle it out against the enemy, there would be no real tension.

I mean, once the battle begins, its not over untill somone is completly whiped out.

Not like in a sub where the tension of not knowing where the enemy is, a battleship v battleship doesnt really suffer from lack of visuality.

If thats even a word.

Is there any mention of having a destroyer command for SH3?

I think it would be really cool to play the same game (graphics and all) only now you're the destroyer. You could patrol the ocean alone, or help guard a convoy, giving commands to other destroyers etc etc.

That reminds me ... they should improve the AI so that ships in a taskforce retreat as soon as, say, 50% of their comrades are destroyed. IL-2 had a feature like this, and it really added to the overall believability of the AI.

I for one would love a game that lets you command (realistically) a single WW2 warship (of course, some battle cruiser or better, pocket battleship). But do it in Sh3 manner - with control rooms, firing solutions, etc. Raid commerce, do all this type of thing. In WW2 they rarely had big naval fights, bar pacific.

You like the sound of your deck gun dealing with those little merchants? Imagine what commanding a triple 15in turret would sound like...

I'd say a non sub warfare can be exciting. Heck I'd make one if I could.

Why not just focus on the anti-submarine aspect? I agree that hunting merchants with a destroyer would get old fast. I was thinking more along the lines of having you command a single destroyer to defend convoys and whatnot. Of course the occasional surface battle wouldn't be bad either.

thats why I believe a Destroyer Command III would be perfect. DDs were the workhorses of the navy and did stuff like:

- Anti submarine
- anti aircraft
- anti ship (esp in the pacific with all those naval battles)
- rescue
- shore bombardment, etc etc.

I for one would love a DCIII. I tried DCII and Enigma Rising Tide, but the graphics just put me off in a big way (see ubisoft, you've now spoilt me ).
