Default Apple, Quicktime, iTune and problems with them

I could need assistance, please.

I have a CD which also has a movie track and for that needed to install Quicktime (a somehow downgraded verison, I think, but I am not sure: I never use nor needed quicktime despite for this single movie). It worked for months.

then I stumbled over a website and for displaying some stuff there I needed to upgrade my Quicktime version, it said. I got a download link to Apple, and there again they said I could upgrade via the linked exe, Quicktime 6.x .

I ran that version and learned not before the installation process, that itune was combined with it. Okay. Not of interest for me, i don'T download music. I saw the site stuff via Quicktime (new), and it also displayed my old movie from the CD (a music video). then I red that itune has some sissues and that many security companies regard it as beeing infested with spyware functionality. It also was running in the background constantly and one could not switch it off. So I decided to get rid of it. But there was no deinstall function provided with that installation. Wonderful, that is the kind of stuff that I love - if for example deinstallation is not planned for, for the software is too wonderful to ever be deinstalled. I went to the software installation/deinstallation option within windowsXP. There itune and Quicktime were listed. But selecting them resulted in a deinstallation process that started - and stopped withit error message or warning. I tried repeatedly, but both programs did not deinstall.

I then deleted both folders by hand, planning to clean and delete the registry entries by hand, via search-function. Only to learn that there were (and still are) DOZRNS of entries related to iTune or Quicktime.

Meanwhile I have learned that before installing a newer version of Quicktime, any old version should be deinstalled first. which I did not, because it was about an upgrade and the did not tell me in advance, right?

I tried to install the old version again. It did, but the program did not run, it broke off with some error message. It again did not deinstall via WindowsXP-Software-(de)install-option. I deleted that folder again by hand, and then installed the newer version again. It did not run either, and also did not deinstall.

So now I am really messed up. I want to kill itune for sure, and want to go back to the first, old version of Quicktime, and want the registry cleaned, but do not know if really all entries found by searching for "Apple", "iTune", "Quicktime" could be deleted without risk. There were many Apple-related entries inside Windows even befdorfe I ever installed the old Quicktime the first time.

Anyone able to give me orientation, information, advise?

Burn, Karma, burn. :rotfl:

I use a thing called "Quick Time Alternative" which comes with "Media Player Classic", it plays all Quicktime stuff without the annoying spyware/crapware, and it's easy to uninstall.

That's the only help I can offer, after you solve these issues, go for this instead:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...lternative.htm;

Had no idea that Quicktime/itune was so messy a software.

It porbably got messed up by installing a new version over the old one. they say this should not be done. bu why, then, don't they tell me that in advance? Damn smartheaded freaks.

that Cd was the first single-CD I ever bought in my life, last time I bough a single record was during my schoolyears. After two years, "Maybe" still has me hooked. The rest of the Album is not for me.

I try to stay away from the iTune stuff. It seems to be more of a headache than its worth.

I did not know that it was coming automatically with Quickplayer 6.x and higher. I have no use for it. I only wanted QP. they do not tell you in advance.

For version 7, they do offer one without iTunes (one of the small links on the main QT download page). Here's a direct link:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

For removal, might be useful:
http://docs.info.apple.com/jarticle....rtnum=93698-en
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp
and of course manual registry key hunting.

the docs hold no news, unfortunately. The deinstallation-command was always ignored, despite itune been shut down before, as described. It did not work like described in these docs. Manual registry hunting: there are several DOZEN key antries, and I am not sure about each and everyone of the, so I need to leave them there.

New installation any Quicktime or iTune version result in non-working software only. It's totally messed up. I do not touch the construction site again, before things brake that are leading beyond the Apple applications.
