*sigh*
Spent most of yesterday evening chasing the remainder of a convoy north of Ireland. After my first attacks, I was down to 2 fish - one in each end. Running on a parallel course at full speed (daylight, fortunately no aircraft appeared); just as I was to turn north towards the convoy, a Clemson appeared. Dive to avoid being seen, but of course now the convoy gains on me - and I was never much ahead in the first place. Worse, one of the escorting Corvettes seemed to have more than a clue of something fishy (sorry ![]() I managed to sneak into the convoy, my idea was to disable 2 C2's with a shot to their stern, hide and return with my guns later. And it all worked beautifully, except for 1 thing: My well-placed fish didn't even slow the b*ggers down! ![]() Sometime I hate this lovely game... BRGDS SVen |

I hear ya bro. Happens to the best of us. At least you did your duty like a good Kaleun and attacked again and again while you still had fish in the tubes. Admiral Donitz would be proud!!

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: P.S. If it is possible I would recommend either a stern or bow shot (rather bow). Make that magnetic and you're C2 is doomed! |

It is nice to be able to flare em up by hitting the sweet spot but it's not always possible I find. I always manually aim for just under or just behind the stack by the fuel bunkers/engine area but count myself lucky if one torp does the trick. The best I hope for is a reduction in speed so's to let the rest of the convoy move on while I reload and deck gun the stragglers which is just as good cos you still save on torpedo's. Usually theres ample time to bop the crippled ships and still be able to end around the convoy for another run, unless you are near port. Having said that it's the C3's and the larger tankers that thwart me. Those things just laugh at your eels, often sucking up the effects of 3 torps without any noticeable damage or ill effects. Is this historically accurate does anyone know? I know it would depend on the cargo to some extent, and I reckon the torpedo yields would be about the same but would be interesting to have historical data to have a look at all the same.

Reminds me of one of my frustrating patrols. After patroling my assigned grid and expending all but four of my fish, I decided to head to AM 54. You know, that sweet spot NW of Ireland. Found a big fat convoy and took down one C3 and left a C2 and a large tanker dead in the water. After evading the DDs, I resurfaced in the hopes of finishing off those helpless tubs with my deck gun. No dice, cant man deck gun in storm.

I would have waited for the weather to improve....even if it would have taken two weeks......as long as I had gas.....this is where it would be cool if the sim modelled Supply levels of food which is something that has never been modelled.....just think ...one more variable you have to consider. If the food runs low...maybe moral will take a critical hit and your chief would start whispering under his breath that "we need to return to base sir"! and if you dont you could be punished by being demoted or a loss of reown or munity (crew refusing to follow orders)...once you plot a cousre for home (last course marker some where close to your base) moral should improve and you crew should function normally.......it should be incorporated into the game I think ...how would that be for immersion eh???

My Dad was on destroyers in the war and once had to sink a damaged merchant that would never run again. Gunfire just would not sink her, as she was loaded with lumber.
Finally, two torpedoes had to be used to break it up, and still parts and lumber were floating. ![]() |

There's a good story that has been posted here a few times about a ship (going to Spain I think?) that was hit by several torps (and many more that didn't explode), was bombed a bit, had bombs go off that close that it was lifted out of the water, and was still floating well enough to be towed the rest of the way
![]() Not fun when it happens in the game though ![]() |

I don't know what mod's you're playing with, but a C3 should be brought down consistantly with one eel, 500m or less range, set for M, 3.5m depth, 70-80 deg. AOB. That's playing at 86% realism,...... maybe you're playing at a higher setting and that makes a difference.
It's been my experience that with those settings, a hit in the sweet spot is practically automatic. Tankers and C2's are another matter though, and I've used as many as four eels to sink them. Good hunting!

If it was possible, better to have put two torps into one for sure to really disable/sink it.
Better to get one than none. A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush... |

in my last patrol i found a convoy , and my u-boat with 13 torpedos onboard. :|\
Because the scort was only three destroyers, i choose did the first periscope depht attack at the end of the day for recognise the convoy and using only one torpedo for target. i stopped a c2 and broke a c3 in two , other c2 damaged and slow down. at night i surface and finish the damaged ships. during the night i did more attacks in the convoy with the same metod, if the ship don´t slow down, it was a primary target for the next attack. i finally i sunk one small merchant, two c3 and 5 c2 ![]()
