I am looking for a good book that covers some of the more technical aspects of WWII submarine warfare...more about the boats and innovations.
I plan on going to barnes and noble tomarrow to pick up 'steel boats and iron hearts' and I need to suplement the personal accounts with tech details. Mike

Well other than placing a order for Steel boats iron hearts I was able to buy a copy of Wolf Pack- the story of the U-boat in WWII.
it is more about the technical aspects...history of design and usage...not exactly as comprehensive as I would like but it has some great photos and some interesting diagrams. it is good for a start I suppose I still have the title of the book said above in my wallet to remind me next time I hit amazon.com Thanks guys...true gentlemen Mike

I'm not much of a book guy but I sure read a lot of them.
![]() On the US side, I'd say the most important tech was the radar, and then the electric (wakeless) torpedo. Together they gave the captain much more flexibility in his attack methods. The radar made night surface attack much safer and easier to handle. Electric torpedo, with lower speed, is a great ambush weapon when the enemy cannot detect the wake and counter-attack (but you still have to contend with sonar) The sound-homing torp arrived too late in 1945 to be of much effect at all. For the German side, it's the Wolfpack tactic, then snorkel, IMHO. However I must profess I didn't study the German side much. |
