Default Cracking Gibraltar

Sorry if this has been done before

It is a stormy night July 1941 and being on the outskirts of Straits of Gibraltar I thought it would be chance to steam in there ahead flank and see if I could sink anything in port

but boy oh boy is that port well protected - i couldn't get close

has anyone actually penetrated Gibraltar's defences ?

I'm certain someone has managed it before.
It does make the channel look like a nice friendly place to be though :hmm: .

Get as close as possible undetected on a dark stormy night, go deep, wait for a convoy then come up under a slow merchant, match his speed and follow very closely in his wake close to the surface(20 - 25m) sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

I've got in once.... It was a night time sortie with heavy rain, heavy fog & wind 15. All I found in Gib was a single costal merchant which ate one of my eels.

Getting out however was a real struggle. As I was leaving a task group appeared with 6 DD's, 2 Corvettes and a Carrier. 4 of the DD's and the corvettes hounded me for 4 hours before giving up and returning to port. Just when I thought things were starting to go my way 2 Hunt I's turned up and started attacking me. I sunk one and damaged the other enabling my escape.

It was a long trip back to Lorient with port diesel destroyed and hull at 65% integrity.

Was highly disappointed that there wasn't anything else in the harbour.

Doe anyone remember in Aces of the Deep that when you entered the Med at Gibralter you could not get back out submerged because of the strong current ?

Ironically the Shorts Sunderland is code letter U of No. 461 Squadron,
and the submarine is U-461.

The Strait of Gibraltar has a very strategic location. Ships that travel from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and vice versa, pass through this strait overlooked by the Rock of Gibraltar. Also, very many people who travel from Europe to Africa and vice versa, travel through this strait. During World War II, the British controlled the straits from their nearby base. German submarines entering the Mediterranean Sea were effectively trapped, because they couldn't leave on the surface and the undersea currents were too strong to leave underwater.

Seems they have it right.

Oh I KNOW it's true about the currents

it should have been modeled into SH3 like it was in AoD

I've went through and back twice.
The majority of the screens are at the entrance.
Go deep, rig for silent runnning,,and 'patience'.
Both times however, there was nothing in the harbor worth the enffort.. :P
However, you can wreak some serious havoc in the med once through on merchants..

Prahaps I am wrong, but I am fairly sure that SHIII does have a West-->East current in the Gibralter Straights. However its not as strong as it should be
