Default GFO affects the way AI behaves

Hello, I was trying out Webster's GFO mod v1.1 and realized something weird.

In the vanilla game, the Mogami in the Torpedo Attack tutorial of Submarine School, moves straight and changes its direction after reaching certain plotting points. However, when the GFO enabled, Mogami starts making evasive maneuvers (the S shaped moves) right when I raise the periscope.

I am not sure if I am detected, since it does not fire at me. I thought this mod is all about bug fixes, but seems like it also affects the way AI behaves. Is this true, or am I missing something?

I have GFO installed, but have a million things added on top of it, so I only made a quick check about what files may have changed the AI detection capabilities and couldn't find much.

As far as I could see, GFO files don't change anything related to AI detection capabilities (or Mogami's), nor with the mission itself.

The only file that I could find that might change something is in the data/cfg/sim.cfg file, which have some general values for Visual and Radar detections, but I couldn't compare it with the stock file because of all the mods I have installed right now.

But I'm no expert in all of this . I'd wait for someone else's opinion.

more than likely, you were detected when playing that mission using GFO.
GFO does make some changes to the IJN detection capabilities, especially in the Visual sensor area.
In GFO, the Mogami has neither hydrophone not sonar sensors, so she either detected you via radar or visual sensor.

having IJN ships fire at you is a dicey thing. it does not happen as frequently in Stock or GFO but if you play FOTRSU or Dark Waters, you will be assaulted by gunfire, even while submerged, and you will be torpedoed when you play FOTRSU.

make sure that you are fully submerged when you make your approach. some boats have a periscope depth that exposes some of the topside equipment, either of the two scopes or even the top of the sail, especially when seas are heavy. once you discover that, you will need to adjust your depth after you dive to periscope depth.

good luck!

... and do not leave the periscope up any longer than necessary, especially if you are within 5000 yards of your target.

The only sensible explanation would be that I am detected, I did not know they were not firing, though.

Even when right at the water level?

The game AI is rather coarse, and difficult to adjust, so yes, sometimes even when you are barely above the surface with it. Bring the scope up, keep as low as you can, get the data you need, and go back down with it. 30 seconds max, and preferably shorter spurts than that.

as PB commented, detection can be difficult to predict, what with all of the various factors involved: AI detection from multiple sensors, enemy capabilities, the number of ships in your vicinity that could detect you, and then, there is Lady Luck, which is the dice roll (random factor).

i forget if i experienced this in FOTRSU or Dark Waters (playing as a Uboat skipper), i raised the scope for an observation and, no sooner did the scope break the surface, we took gunfire from one of the convoy ships. do not remember if it was a merchie or an escort because it did not matter, we were shot at.

so, the moral of the story is that detection is difficult to predict.

you do the best that you can with what you are presented. i always pray for high winds/seas during an attack because it gives me the advantage, especially high winds/sea at night.
