first convoys

Trying to learn how to operate in a convoy mission. Things get more complicated fast. First tries were with sub school mission, then also with Borneo Convoy from the Quick missions. First couple of times attracted too much attention from the escort destroyers, either before getting into a good attack position or right after launching first torpedo attack. And did not avoid depth charges fast enough. One time got both periscopes destroyed. Damage Control can't fix that. A third time, might have been the Borneo mission, I was doing better. Sank 2 freighters, unfortunately small ones. Need to select targets better. I sank 2 destroyers also. One was a good setup, not attacking me. Other was a stern tube shot, happened to get a good shot. But I was getting pounded by 2 remaining destroyers and could not complete the mission.
I went back to the school mission just an hour ago. Pleased to report success on the mission!

Sank a large modern tanker which was 10,000 tons and completed the mission. Reason for success: getting much better at plotting position and track for the targets and planning where to intercept. Then getting there without being spotted. At periscope depth at first then down under to 160 or more until close to attack point.
I had watched a couple of videos also, that help show the steps for getting to the right place and planning a shot for close to 90 degrees. Still using auto-targeting at this point.

I've been playing Sh4 since it came out, before that SH3, and way back in the day silent service and Gato. I still use auto targeting and most of the time all the baby settings, otherwise I get massacred 99% of the time. I gotta hand it to the guys that use manual targeting and realistic settings. Maybe when I retire I'll have more time to play more realistic but then again I've played quite a bit over the years! Wait till you start playing some of the mods, it gets even better than vanilla, and vanilla was pretty damn good at the start. Keep sinking them!
My favorite mod is Darkwaters, German subs in the Atlantic and Med areas. Fall of the rising sun and TMOWTW are great also IMO.
