GREAT SEA STORY (Trivia)
The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought Captain John DS. Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo's position was LAT 0º 31' N and LONG 179 30' W. The date was 31 December 1899. "Know what this means?" First Mate Payton broke in, "We're only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line". Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime. He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ship's position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather & clear night worked in his favor. At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line! The consequences of this bizarre position were many: The forward part (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & in the middle of summer. The rear (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter. The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899. In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900. This ship was therefore not only in: Two different days, Two different months, Two different years, Two different seasons But in two different centuries - all at the same time! Hello Sharkstooth, welcome back indeed
![]() Interesting story with the ship being in different time zones at the same time. Re the link i have dived a bit myself and am usually not scared; but one of the first times in the mediterranean I was swimming at the surface snorkeling and comfortably looking down at rocks, sea urchins and fishes a meter beneath me, until I 'overshot' an edge and suddenly hovered above a vertical blue-black abyss, very much like some of the photos posted in your link. Really had to take a deep breath to overcome this frightening feeling.

While most sailors are familiar with the Shellback (crossing the equator), there is also a similar ceremony (but very rare) when crossing the equator at the int'l date line. I believe its called The Golden Dragon but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe it is called
Golden Shellback, a person who has crossed the equator at the 180th meridian. Emerald Shellback which is received after crossing the Equator at the prime meridian Has anyone received both the Golden shellback and the Emerald Shellback? Or does only the first time count?

On the other side of things, the Greenwich Meridian passes through the road near to our house - just a few hundred yards from here out in the fens - so what am I when I cycle over it and back? I have to cross it whenever I go anywhere

Don't worry. You're in the exactly same boat as anyone else who lives on one of the meridian lines. It's those of us way out in the minutes and seconds who might have an issue. ![]()
