The Neue Zürcher Zeitung writes about the death of Gunnar Heinsohn. As one can imagine, I attach enormous importance to the man and his work, I referred often to him.
His inconvenience, which brought him many enmities for his statements, was based on the fact that he had done his homework before he contributed to a topic, and homework for him meant: a sheer staggering empirical data basis, on whose analysis and knowledge he based his conclusions, especially on demographic topics: sober, conclusive, consistent and mercilessly unwavering. That he thus offered little surface for criticism of his empiricism-heavy statements was severely resented by many: they could not stand up to him with verbiage and politically correct drivel, but he could back up his unwelcome analyses and conclusions. Most of them were simply no match for him. --------------------------- The German publicist and sociologist Gunnar Heinsohn is dead. This was reported on Friday (17. 2.) several German media with reference to Heinsohn's family unanimously. According to the report, Heinsohn died on Feb. 16 in Gdansk, Poland. He was also born near the city in November 1943. Until his retirement in 2009, the social scientist taught social pedagogy at the University of Bremen, and until 2020 he also taught war demography at the NATO Defense College in Rome. With a doctorate in economics, he also researched questions of monetary theory. He became known to a broader public through his publications in the field of demography and migration. Heinsohn coined the term "youth bulge. According to him, a large surplus of young men in societies leads with great regularity to their violent destabilization. "Where there are too many young men, there is killing," he told the NZZ in a 2006 interview. He applied this thesis to the Arab region, among others, where the disproportion between demographic development and available opportunities for social advancement was particularly evident. Heinsohn published regularly in the NZZ on various issues. ------------------------- A very bright intellect has gone out. Bon voyage, Sir.
