Run Silent, Run Deep - the book

Just finished this truly great book. I imagine all the grognards on this forum have read it, probably more than once! Something that kind of surprised me was the tactic of stalking enemy shipping in close to shore. Does the SH4 game mechanics reproduce this? Are you more likely to find prey in certain advantageous locations or does the game merely trigger shipping based on a timer or some such software coding?
I intend to try and duplicate the patrol techniques from the book in my next career so I may find out for my self if I experience different frequency of encounters with the enemy.
