The Atlantic puffins in Maine were hunted to almost total extinction. In 1902, only two Atlantic puffins were known to exist in Maine.
Starting in 1972, the Audubon Society started bringing down Atlantic puffins from Newfoundland in hopes they could repopulate in Maine. Today there are more than 1,300 pairs of puffins across several islands, mostly on Eastern Egg Rock, Seal Island, and Matinicus Rock. The project was the first one in history that restored a seabird to an offshore island where it had been extirpated by humans. ![]() Everyone should know their Puffins ![]()
