Default Using torpedo in rough sea

Hi folks,

Yesterday, I spotted a convoy including the Southampton class cruiser. The cruiser did not spot me. The distance was 750 meters and she was directly my 180. I used both impact and magnetic torpedos with 5 m. standard depth option. However, all my torps went under the ship.

Can you explain to me what is the best strategy in the rough sea to sink ships? (By the way, it was my first mission).

Regards.

Hi Mr Forester a very warm welcome to Subsim the one stop shop for SH3-SH4-SH5 Mods Help and advice theres a lot of time served Uboat skippers and Modders that are all round good eggs here and will help you answering questions and helping you get your Mods squared away Saltue Sir Happy Hunting.

1. did you have dud torpedoes activated in you realism settings.

2. was the sea state rough.

3. also was it early war 1939 - june1940.

if so then torpedoes were prone to running deeper or premature detonating
I would only use magnectic setting in calm seas in early war setting

I see your looking at SH3 Commander Mod 2.6 theres a newer version download link below

Post your mod list. The ships in SH3 tend to behave like rubber duckies in heavy seas.
If your wind speed was 15 m/s the torpedoes can go too deep under the target as it's bouncing along in the waves.

@blackswan40

Thank you for your warm greetings.

1- Yes, it was active.

2- What do you state rough mean? The was quite wavy and the weather was quite windy if you ask to me that.

3- The mission time October 40.

Understood. In this case, what is your suggestion in this weather? Magnetic or impact one? How to regulate depht of torps?

Thanks for the mod list. Easy solution to your problems.
You are using the H.sie patch, a good thing. But assuming you have it's torpedo failure fix activated you must do the following to insure the best chance of your torpedo hitting.

- multiply the wind speed by 4 to get the minimum depth to set your torpedoes.
I.e., say the wind is 9 m/s. 9 x 4 = 3.6. Your torpedoes must be set deeper than 3.6 to have a chance to work correctly. Don't go crazy though; i.e., in this example around 4 would be good.
If you set the depth less than this result, say 3 in this example, there is little chance of your torpedo keeping it's depth correct.

See the patches documentation for details.

However, even if you set the depth correct there is still a (much smaller) chance your torpedo won't work correct for various reasons, and as I said, the rubber ducky bouncing of SH3 ships can cause misses too.
In terms of pistols, the impact is more reliable at any stage as was the case historically.
