Hello, Is there an instruction manual?

Hello,
I have had a few goes on different modes and find quick missions to be the most effective at getting involved in a good punch up. However, I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. Besides trying to make the triangle green and shooting, while desperately trying to avoid the escorts, I have no idea. Even the navigation has me stumped.
Is there a manual that explains in simple steps how to progress?
I am not sure of the Zero through the periscope and how to use that with the compass. The zero is the front of the boat and then.... not too sure. I have been able to manage with blind luck to hit a few ships and I think I sank two.
The videos I find a little too much and some are a little heavy with the pink floyd drowning out the narration.
Any help or advice would be great, Thanks
