Better communications huh. Since submarines are hardly going to advertise their location apparently the only realistic solution I see is to put a transponder aboard every fishing vessel and on every fishing net.

British SOP is as follows

Upon detection of a fishing vessel the submarine is to keep the fishing vessel at a distance of more than 3nm

If the submarine is within 3nm they are to surface

Has been that way for some time

Fishing accidents do happen and when you bottom trawl you can sink a vessel it’s happened plenty of times over the years

The fact that the Dutch boat was surfaced in transit took that out of the equation and the British boat being along side at the time also discounted that theory

But atleast the British came to a conclusion unlike the French investigation

That fella on the left in blue was skipper of one of the patrol boats I was stationed aboard. He was a lawyer by trade a good skipper too who eventually became Commandant of the hooligan navy
