If anyone wants to know how u-boats were actually hunted, how they reacted to being hunted, and how asdic was operated/worked, then "U-Boat Killer" by Capt. Donald Macintyre is a must read.

Few, by all means not all, tidbits:

- escorts routinely pinged with asdic as part of their asdic sweeps. Not just only *after* a contact was made via hydrophones, etc.
- u-boats could not remain stationary.
- asdic could determine range and bearing but not accurate depth.
- asdic could detect a sub resting on the sea floor.

Many, many other bits of good info. Highly recommended.
