Default I think many of us in this forum are well advised to not travel to HongKong or China

Done all my travelling to both of them in the late seventies and early eighties so I reckon there will be nothing new or worth seeing in this day and age.

Wow... in there did you read the article about the bird who's getting abuse because her name is 'Corona'? I'll bet her sister's glad she didn't get called Chlamydia

I'd be lying if I said yes because I was usually inebriated within an hour of getting ashore.

I vaguely remember getting picked up by a young 'lady' in the Kings Club but then again that might have been in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

One thing that does stick in the memory after all these years is how we'd go into a tailors shop and order a handmade suit of the most hideous design imaginable (I once ordered one with mushrooms dotted around) and never go back for it then a few months down the line on the next visit you'd usually see the very same suit in the shop window at an almost giveaway price because nobody would be foolish enough to buy such a ridiculous creation

There was a waitress at Ned's who was Chinese but spoke with a perfect British accent. Let's just say I was smitten.

We weren't in port long enough, but I really wanted to get the embroidered dragons added to the inside sleeves and neck flap of my best set of "dress blues".

(For the non-Navy types, dress blues are the traditional "cracker jack" uniform and the dragons weren't considered "Navy Reg" but were allowed)

Meanwhile, I got bagged one fine duty night with Shore Patrol (which was usually reserved for junior petty officers in the duty section) and a British Marine showed up in a Rover looking every bit as junior as me. So, off we go for another long night of chasing drunks when he says "Ever see Victoria Peak at night?". Knowing immediately that it was going to be worth seeing I said "I just bought this great camera, give me a minute to go get it" (on the Barbel, we could dock at the pier of HMS Tamar instead of having to anchor out) then off we went.

Naturally, we had to ride the cable car just after it closed to ensure that no drunken sailors or Marines were taking the mountain apart and as we were riding it back down again I asked him "How can you go home once your tour is up?". He laughed, "I don't know..".

I've no idea of your age (I'm 63) but I should imagine if we ever met up over a few drinks we'd have some great tales to tell one another.

Another memory was going ashore in either Penang or Port Kelang and taking a walk up a hill to a Buddhist Temple and seeing what I initially thought was a Swastika. I was discussing with a colleague what the odds were of coming across this on the other side of the world when a monk who obviously had a great command of English explained its true meaning and the fact it pre-dated the German version by well over a thousand years.

AHA! :I'm goin' visual! On the infamous Penang/Kelang run, you acquired the knowledge from an old monk to win at who/what/where on my ca: 2016 (dubbed very sneaky by Eich) post question: "what infamous division wore this shoulder patch?" stemming from Southwestern native-American tradition the Oklahoma based 45th division until replaced with a more appropriate 'thunderbird" logo!

I'm 59 going on 19.

For an old diesel boat, the Barbel made some pretty long trips. We were homeported in Sasebo with the USS Darter and I got to visit H/K, Singapore, Korea (a lot, it was only an 18 hour trip), Tokyo/Yokosuka, and we did a limited upkeep in Subic Bay that ran three weeks but felt like 3 years.

When we went to H/K, I was already planning on how to extend my tour in Japan. Which wasn't that tough. The Navy had to pay extra to ship us out there and pay extra to ship us back so all you really had to do was figure out the right people to talk to. Then we had our little "Oops" and all of those plans got shot out of the window and I wound up in Pearl.

The only disappointment was that I never made it to Oz or Thailand and never even crossed the equator (although we did plan to do a "golden shellback" crossing at the date line but it didn't work out).

Thailand eh?

I remember going to Phuket (I'll leva it to your imagination how most of us pronounced it) before it became a holiday resort and the 'Coca Cola' girls would seek permission to come out on canoes under the pretext of selling cans of the stuff
