Support Dick OKane tips

I have a couple of questions on the manual targeting method that hopefully folks that use this method can answer.

The lead ... it’s mentioned to use 15 degree lead. Does that change with distance to target or angle of attack?

Does this method work if you are not at 90 degrees to the target. Say 45 degrees. Do I use the same 15 degree lead and change of angle of boat?

Try these - SH4 guru Rockin' Robbin does a great job of describing it in several YT videos...

This is a hard topic to explain. Let me start by answering your questions.

The great thing about the Dick O'Kane method is that the lead angle doesn't change with distance. However, the lead does change when your angle to the enemy changes. In other words, being 90 degrees to the enemy uses a different lead angle than if you were say 35 degrees.

The O'Kane method does work for any angle you are to the enemy. As I already mentioned there are different lead angles for every angle you are to the enemy.

Another factor to keep in mind is that 15 degree lead angle is meant for the Mark 14 torpedo on the fast setting (46 kts), at 90 degrees. Using a torp with a different speed requires a different lead angle.

One thing that is important to note is that 15 degree angle that is recommended is not meant to be used for every situation. It's a one size fits most kind of thing. It will work reasonably well for cargo ships going roughly 9-15 kts. When the targets are going faster or slower you aren't going to hit.

I'd suggest you watch youtube videos until you find one that clicks for you. Also, ColonelSanderLite has tables that show the lead angles for every attack angle, speed of the enemy and for each torp in the game.
