Surrey train stabbing

The suspect being sought for the stabbing of a man on a train in Surrey has been arrested, British Transport Police say.

A 51-year-old man died after suffering multiple knife wounds during a "vicious fight" on board a Guildford to London train on Friday afternoon.

He was killed in front of his 14-year-old son.

The victim and the attacker both got on the train at London Road station in Guildford at about 13:00 GMT.

A man killed on a train in front of his teenage son was stabbed nine times, a court has heard.

Lee Pomeroy, 51, from Guildford, died in the attack on a train near the town on Friday.

Darren Pencille, 35, of no fixed abode, made two separate court appearances on Monday charged with murder and possessing an offensive weapon.

He told Staines magistrates: "Innocent until proven guilty," adding: "I'm paranoid. I'm hearing voices."

How that works in England, Jim? Are we going to see both sides marching in their doctors of choice or is there somesort of an independent assesment body?


Here in Finland the court would (on request of defence or prosecution) order the suspect into forensic psychiatric evaluation. These are carried out by Niuvanniemi hospital, a state mental hospital nearby Kuopio, Finland. If found to have been 'without understanding' at the time of the crime and also found to be danger to the public, this same institution would likely be their home for rest of their lives.

Here in the UK the defence would first make the plea backed up by their experts then the prosecution will put forward their experts and a jury will decide which one they believe.
