The report shows that many charities netted very little — less than 20%, or even zilch. Some wound up being in hock to the fundraisers for their ineffective or overpriced work.

In the UK it came to light some years ago the bulk went to Admin. No idea if this is still the case now in the UK.

When the Combined Federal Campaign season started they always provided us with information. Listing participating institutions and how your donation was percentage wise broke down and used by them. For the most part it wasn't all that bad.
