Here is the scenario:
You come across two VERY juicy targets, namely, HMS Illustrious and HMS Nelson, surrounded by a tight ring of around 10-12 destroyers steaming along at 17kts. Its daytime, and you only have one torpedo left in the bow and one in the aft tube. How would you go about it, and what tactics could be used to get them both!? Obviously you would have to position yourself parallel to their course if you wanted to fire both fore and aft tubes, and outside of the 'ring' because of the tight Web of ASDIC. Range from your sub to targets inside ring is around 3-4km from the outside. Possible? Bearing in mind that the destroyers will go full spaz mode when they hear a torp passing beneath their impenetrable ring! And of course that means the targets will also slow down and change course before your fish reach them. Magnetic? Depending on sea state. Or impact set to medium? What are the best options? John.

Think I'd take the Chicken option, fire long range potshot turn 180 keep aft torp for any pursuing Destroyers then go deep and silent creep away. Depends on sub, would need something really fast to get on parallel course, if the destroyers did not get you the CO2 would

![]() How about if you position yourself parallel to their course, but facing the opposite direction, and fire the aft torp at the first target, then the bow at the second target just after. Probably when they are both almost at your 90/270 degrees?......and then get the hell out of dodge! ![]() There isn't anyway of getting inside that ring of ASDIC ![]() Shame we dont have MK48 (Finger of God) fish in 1940 ![]()
