Having massive trouble with the final mission on campaigns in either era. Despite saving and reloading what seems like dozens of times I've only ever sunk the SSBN once - and that was pure luck when I practically spawned on top of it.
Biggest problem seems to be that I always begin the mission really low on stores because I never get a chance to rearm. 4 torpedoes is not enough to deal with 3 escorts, 3 attack subs AND a large SSBN. Anyone got any tips for this? Does the boomer follow any patterns in its position or movements? I can usually find everything but it. Most of the time I'm just blundering around dodging torpedoes trying to find time to drop to 5 knots so I can search on passive. |

Lave the escorts alone...Go for the boomer and then do the escape and evasion dance...

If I knew where it was that would be easy enough.

It does take a bit of luck at times (Spawn location), but be patience and do't engage the escort, once you get a decent plot of their location and heading, it will usually gives you an idea where the boomer will be (between the nearest and furthest escort). try to close on that point till you get a sniff of the boomer, then send at least 2 or more torps down that bearing set to go active pass the escort screen.

The last mission has a very long duration, so you do have enough time to go back to base and rearm.
When you are going towards the enemy task force on the campaign map, make sure you are advancing on slow speed, because if you find them on full speed, you spawn into the contact going flank and nearly immediately give away your location. Fire no weapons until you have identified the boomer. In the mission files, the boomers have their behavior set to 'defensive', which means at the slightest provocation they turn tail and run, and you'll never find them again. Softly, Softly, Catchee Monke.
