Today’s dive we will be searching for the Japanese Naval Destroyer Hayate that was lost nearly 75 years ago during the Battle of Wake.
Live stream here: http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/okeano.../exstream.html ROV is in the water now. Be aware they're not 100% sure what they're diving on is the Hayate.

Well it's not the Hayate. They're thinking now it's some kind of transport.

I didn't quite get the name but I did catch it was sunk by the Triton.
From Wikipedia. On 24 December1942, the submarine sighted the mast of a ship on the horizon, headed for Wake anchorage. Triton (alerted by ULTRA)[29] closed to 1,000 yards (910 m) and launched two torpedoes. One hit under the stack, the other under the foremast. Amakasu Maru Number 1 was obliterated in a cloud of smoke and steam as she went under. Looks just like it and it was a water tanker. http://www.combinedfleet.com/Amakasu_t.htm

There within 50 meters of the next target, Pretty neat seeing this in real time. Hopefully, it's what they are looking for.
edit: Rats! Turned out to be a big rock. |

1 for 3 isn't too bad. They hit the target on the first one.

Great find Fred.
![]() I'm sure you already know of the expeditions to the carriers lost at the battle of Midway in addition to locating the Japanese submarine I 52 that was ironically located in the Atlantic Ocean in 1700 feet of water and the Israeli Submarine, the Dakar lost in the Mediterranean Sea . http://www.combinedfleet.com/MidwayFind.htm There was also the endeavors of deep sea explorer Robert Ballard who is also known for discovering the wrecks of Titanic and the Bismarck among others . http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/scien...8-ballard_6-4/ |

Looks like they are getting ready to send the ROV back down. I think the bottom is around 4000 ft deep. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
Actually. looking at the chart on the left of screen 3, I think it's meters? Last edited by mako88sb; 08-11-16 at 03:49 PM. |

I've been watching the O. E. dives for the last few years, so it wasn't really a "find." I knew they going to dive on a wreck this expedition, I just didn't know it was going to be that dive until just before I posted.
Wanna hear the best part? While I gave the link to the O. E. web site, the live feed is also on YouTube. And since March, I've had a smart-tv with a YouTube app, so I can watch the dives on a 43 inch HD screen. ![]()
