I was king of the seas in 1939 until one destroyer showed up.
I tried everything to escape and he was pinpointing me with an incredible precision. After I barely stayed in one piece he was out of DC and backup was here. This other destroyer was easy, he was spitting in wrong place. So I think this first guy was an elite. What kind of tactic do you use to escape? |

Run silent, if he is above you, speed up and full left/right rudder.
If he passed you, silent running and go deeper or up to change the depth. |

Yeah, what i do i stay off the bottom for at least 20m. Their sonar can bounce of sea bottom and pick up the sub more quickly.
But with this destroyer nothing worked. |

I was even thinking maybe if i go shallow and fire front and back torpedo at the same time and then dive and go silent, maybe that will confuse him for a while

To evade is simple. When you fire torpedos undetected, or if you are found and you dive, the Escorts make way to your last known location. If you are diving, you need to use flank speed for as long as possible to get away from your pursuers.
If i am headed north, and I dive after being detected, I want to change my direction. I want to get at least 3-5km away from the spot I was detected at, so I set a compass on the Nav map. Also, do not head into a convoy or other ships. If you are evading, then evade! do not head into the fray. They will hunt you a long time! I try not to make outrages directional changes if i am able, to get out of the area as soon as possible. Once the escorts get within medium range, I want to be silent running, and my engines set at 50rpms. Go to your knots dial, and select something under 1knot to get this rpm status. The command room has an rpm gauge for you to use. Silent running in SH3 was not modeled correctly. It only sets your speed to slow, which is around 2 knots and still loud.

Just go to the speed telegraph and change it over to knots. Then okay with this dial until you get 50rpm or less

I try to avoid the DDs but if there is not enough time to avoid the sonar then I prefer the rule "The best defense is a good offense" and use magnetic shot to sink the closing DD.
No one likes to be depth charged after all...
