Will digital dload work with mods?

From lurking on these forums and trying to read everything I can, I have gathered that a lot of mods don't work with the Steam version of SH5. I have not purchased SH5 yet, but was wondering if a digital download from somewhere like Gamestop or Gamersgate would act the same as the stand alone box version of SH5. I have been wanting to play this for a very long time but from everything I've read it needs to be modded to get rid of a lot of glitches and bugs. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Steam Conversion Installation Instructions for SH5 Updated Version

Thank you for the quick replies. Off to gamestop with the money card I go! I'm excited about getting it fired up and hopefully modded correctly.
