U-72
Kaptlt. Erich Steinadler
December 16, 1942

Departed Brest, France bound for American Waters off New Jersey and Long Island. Made voyage with no sightings arriving on station 6 January. We Sighted a Ceramic Type troop ship steaming northward approximately 15km off Monmouth Beach, Identified as the S.S. president Lincoln, appeared low in waterline, heavily laden, fired spread of two with impact triggers, missed. fired another spread of two adjusting target speed. Numerous secondary explosions followed both torpedo detonations, ship sank by the bow for 14,534 GRT.

on 9 January successful infiltration into New York Harbor, all traffic, lights, etc as in peacetime. Warships at anchor, observed small craft ill suited for anti submarine warfare to be patrolling harbor and gateway region. sighted the troop ship S.S. Highland Monarch at anchor, armed with 5" gun astern, noted military stores and personnel visible on deck, fired spread of three from long range all of which found the target, observed ship to sink up to its masts. frantic response from patrol craft which searched the area with spotlights well away from our position. turned to depart the harbor area and fired single shot at a Clemson Destroyer at anchor, main magazine detonated destroying the vessel instantly. claiming 24,441 and 1,190 GRT respectively

departed NY Harbor on 10 January - Coastal Freighter SS Agua, Great Lakes ship SS Therold and Tug MV Beverly Francis were attacked and sank on the 12th for 1,869 - 1,788 and 1,130 GRT

total this patrol 44,952 GRT, return voyage hindered by poor weather, no sightings from 12 January onward

noted no sub nets, no mining, few patrol craft, no noted air patrol in the area. USN appears grossly unprepared for protracted fight against U-boats off the Atlantic Coast, We will be returning there on the next patrol to waters off Hatteras
