I was cruising around northwest of England and my watch officer spotted a ship about 3000 meters out. The weather was horrible. The waves were so bad that even when underwater my boat was rocking all over the place.
Anyway, I went to the external view to go see what was out there and here is what he saw: ![]() I'm not sure if he was in some fight previous to me but I never fired a shot at him. Could the weather alone cause damage to a small ship? I'm playing LSH2015. Jeff |

Absolutely!
Strong weather can destroy all kinds of man made objects, even those that have been designed to operate in a watery environment. The U-boat itself could be damaged, which is why they sought refuge under the waves, when things got really bad...

Sometimes the weather whips up in squalls, something that might catch a fishing boat or small coastal vessel off guard. They went out for a fishing trip and expected to be back hours earlier, but any one of a hundred reasons got in the way and slowed the return trip. The weather takes a nasty turn with tall waves and strong winds. A lot of water washing over the bow, maybe a dodgy ballast pump quits working, and before you know it, the ship turns turtle, and is lost with all hands, without a trace.
Weather related storm damage has fouled convoy operations for the escorts and merchantmen respectively and even such ocean liners as big as Queen Mary have been knocked about (so size does not always guarantee safety when out on the open seas...)

I heard an interview with one of the retired captains of the QE2 once describe waves that reached as high as the bridge deck, 95 feet above the water line. He said, "that put things into a new perspective"...
