London wasn't the most pleasant of places during that era but many would probably say the same of it now.

Back in 2014 London didn't feel more stuffy or poluted than Ljubljana, whether the center with its great parks or Whitechappel with rows upon rows of buildings.
I'm surprised why people complain about Londons air. I have asthma, live in the countryside, visited during a heatwave and never felt uncomfortable.

London 1870 though, I'd be dead within days

Nonsense, you could cut the carbon from the air with your kukri before breathing it.

In those times I'd be either too poor to own a kukri or woulde prancing around with some fancy rapier

Nice. These would make fantastic visual reference for the art in a Sherlock Holmes RPG.

I'm not cutthroat enough to survive colonial Rodesia.
Vultures would be picking my back stabbed corpse apart within days.
