Default Couple of 'tactical' questions

Hi. Any advice Captains?

1. I'm playing a mission where there is a boomer travelling at 15kts somewhere to the north east and rapidly transiting the area.

Without cheating I think I'm about 15nm sw of it before I even start.

But there might be other targets out there and I'm told to silently track it. But how can I even begin to when I'm so far away and travelling at 5kts to remain 'silent' I'll never catch up?

There isn't a layer to sprint and drift with etc... so how do I do it?

2. In another mission, I'm supposed to spy on a harbour and report contacts. But every time I raise my ESM mast or periscope, I'm instantly spotted.

How do I handle these 'recon' tasks properly?

3. I'm running RA1.4, but how do I use the sonar properly to find distant / quiet contacts? I ask because if I turn auto crew on sonar, they find stuff that the waterfalls just don't show, and yet if I manually seek - even on the same bearing I can't hear anything.

4. Is there a mod that will decrease the sound of the wires being streamed / retrieved, but vastly increase the sound on the waterfall so I can hear contacts better?

I think that's it for now.

Thanks Captains. Happy Hunting.

Please excuse me if I've misread your post, but it does not seem you know about the narrowband sonar screen. This is the second screen of the sonar station and this is how you see tracks that you cannot see on the broadband. The broadband just shows general noise, but the narrowband breaks down the broadband signal and displays the specific sound frequencies that a ship emits. These frequencies (narrowband) can be recognized from much further away than general noise (broadband) because the ambient noise of the ocean does not contain sounds of specific frequencies like man-made objects with rotating machinery do.

Regarding your immediate detection in recon missions, I'm assuming you are playing RA 1.40. In that case, these missions you are referencing were probably not designed for RA. RA models "mast detection" that the stock game and LwAmi do not. Therefore, these missions require some redesign in order to work properly with RA.

Hi Schazly

Yeah, I think you read it wrong, or perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my explanation. If I can clear something up, please let me know.

I do know about - and use - the BB and NB screens. I know that NB is for longer distances and lower frequencies, however no lines appear when scrubbing through it, and no lines appear on the BB waterfall, yet in all my questions pertaining to detecting, while there is nothing on the NB and nothing really visible on the BB, yet the auto crew places trackers.

On BOTH displays.

Yes, as I said in my post, I'm running RA 1.4.

As for whether the missions have been updated, I don't know. Is there some way of checking? Or making them work?

1) Boomers are very noise (relatively) submerines. You can track them with TB-16 Towed Array sonar at 18 kts. All you have to do is maintain proper discance to your target. Btw boomer at 15 kts almost always is near deaf. You can check AI sonar properities with DWEdit program.

2) It is not possible because game engine cannot detect raising mast. In RA "mast detection" depending only for depth. On PD your masts can be always detected (no matter they are raised or lowered) from certain range.

Maybe problem lays in not compatibile (with RA) mission?

3) main detection sonar mode is narrowband. i don't know what is in autocrew because manual sonar is essention for this game.

4) I think streaming/retriving wires aren't detectable for enemy. Openning tubes are detectable from small distances.

Thanks for your feedback.

My question 4: wasn't related to 'in-game / simulation noise of the mechanics' but the UI GAME interface. Streaming / retrieving is VERY loud, but the sounds of the contacts on the sonar screens is very quiet.

I want to know if there is a mod to change those.

i.e. the button presses are loud, but the sound of shrimp or a sub on the BB screen is VERY VERY quiet

I didn't mean the simulated noise of the sub's mechanical systems.

You can change this in options menu.

My settings:
-music (disabled)
-voice (7)
-3d sound (6)
-sound effects (10)

Btw in real life, audio for contact on BB is unnecessary.

In DW like I said before, main tool is NB mode.

On some sonars, it's easier to see very faint NB contacts than on others. Perhaps try fiddling around with your monitor's display settings.

Most likely the mission was not written for RA 1.40. You can open it with editor and check the triggers, name of units ecc ecc ecc

About sound of stream and retreiving...You right, it's too loud. I change station when I streaming or retreiving the towed array. I dont know if it's possible to change that sound and not others.

About your others questions, FPSChazly and P7P8 have already answered.

Thanks for that, but that didn't help me.

Any slider that makes the annoying streaming sound quieter, also quiets the sound contact on the BB display. So I can't hear the shrimp and know it's shrimp not a quiet sub etc...
