Default good torp mod for rfb

KK

I like to play with as high a realism score as possible but I don't wanna do real mk14s. They sucked.
whats a good mod that has reasonable reliability without makin the game a gimme. I'd like to not have no duds checked.

Default not quite

not really more performance oriented.
just don't want 60% off em to be duds/bad.
1 in 10
or so would be acceptable fail rate.

As far as I know there are no mods for what you're looking for. What you're looking for has to be done to certain files ingame.

Default ok..so

ok. so

how does everyone else set up their torpedoes, dud settings?

are there any good torpedo mods?

how, specifically, would someone alter the config file for the dud torpedos?

Holliwood, before Sept 1943 set your Mk 14s to contact only and fire them on the slow speed setting. Also aim 12 feet shallower than you otherwise would. So when firing at a ship with a 20 ft draft you should aim above 8 feet. This should get you the best success rate from them.

The reason is that it avoids the 3 primary issues that plagued the Mk 14, the faulty magnetic exploder, the firing pin being bent with high speed impacts, and the torpedo running deeper than set.

How about this?

Slightly Subnuclear Mark 14 and Cutie Torpedoes. The challenge is not getting close enough to join your victim in annihilation. Call it a realism mod!

The necessity is the mother of invention!!

Why not make your own torpedo mod as you like it? You'll learn a bit of modding along the way.

I'm assuming your using "RFB_2.0" along with "RFB_2.0_Patch_23April2010". There's some tools/utilities you'll need to add to your computer, so pick them up at this sticky menu page "SH4 Master Thread: Popular Mods, Tools, Technical advice & Tactical tips"....look under the "Mod Tools" heading for "[REL] S3D - Silent 3ditor" and follow the instructions with installing it. Might as well download the "WinMerge" app too (its good for comparing/adding/removing text files). Once you've got these two important utilities installed, make it easy on yourself and add their shortcut to your "Send to..." folder. This way when you want to work with a particular game file, you just right click the file and "Send it" to the app you want to work with it. To find your "Send to" folder just type shell:sendto into the Windows Explorer "Address" box. Put an S3D .exe shortcut there.

Now, to make your test mod open the JSGME "MODS" folder and right click an empty space in the right hand pane of Windows Explorer. A menu box will appear, click on "New"...another menu box will appear, click on "Folder".

Name this new folder "My Torpedo Mod" or anything you like.

Open this new folder and make another folder named "Data".

Open this new folder and make another folder named "Library"

Now you're ready to fill your mod with a copy of the file you will use to change the torpedo's function. Open the "RFB_2.0_Patch_23April2010" mod and drill down thru "Data\Library\ to find the "Torpedoes_US.sim" file.....copy it, then paste it into your newly made "Library" folder. Right click the file and "Send" it to the S3D app. The MK-14 torpedo's are found under the 6th and 7th node:

The "Pistols" have three settings.....depending on what date's their used. the "Guidance" section has two. Both have "Dud" percentages you can mess with. I'll not get into what may be to your liking, but things are fairly self explanatory. One thing you can do is open another window within S3D of the Stock games "Torpedoes_US.sim" file and compare the two files....giving you an idea of what RFB did compared to the stock game. Once your done, "Save" your changes and "Activate" your new mod (along with the two for RFB) to see if you like what you've done the next time you play the game.

Remember the measurements are always in Metric units.

And there you go Holliwood. You can join us Rebels all by yourself with CapnScurvy's great instructions. I'd love to see you upload your result to the Subsim download area.

There we were having fun and CapnScurvy, "general nuisance" (that's his tag line not an insult), barges into the thread and actually helps the guy with a gold paved road to exactly what he wants. This is a tough place and if you don't watch it you'll get actual help! Great job Capn! Those were perfectly clear and complete directions.
