Default Silent Hunter 3 Mods

So there are thousands of mods for SH3... So which are the best and most essential? Where do you start?

Essential: One of the supermods - GWX, LSH3, NYGM, WAC. They all correct the major flaws in the game, and they all change it into something workable and wonderful. There are threads on each of them - what they do, how they do it and why. Easy to look up.

Best: That's all a matter of opinion. All have their adherents. Beyond those four there are indeed thousands of smaller mods that are compatible with one or all of the major supermods. None of them are truly essential, but most of them are fun. Pick a supermod, ask the people who favor it why they do so, and look at the other mods to see what catches your fancy.

The author of this thread was a GWX fan, but his list and the ones that follow will give you a little insight as to what's available. Unfortunately he took down his pictures, but the links are still there and others of us still have pictures up.

This thread will give you some idea of what others use.

Lastly, no matter what mods you use, you might want to try this Utility. It's not a mod, but it has many useful functions that help control the game and does for your campaign what supermods do for the game experience.

I (and others) will be glad to answer specific questions, but to list all the available mods would take hours and some would still be missed. Read the SH3 downloads section.

Also, as you browse the threads of mods and the game in general, think about things that you'll like or dislike in the game from both a UI and gameplay perspective. Example: If you're going to be doing a lot of manual targeting, there are mods (UIs) that are better than others for it. Another example: if torpedo failures are going to drive you nuts, then you may want to look for something that mitigates or eliminates them. We all have our pet peeves.

Just ask us anything. The best way to perfect sh3 is by fumbling through it and experiment. If you are looking for the closest thing to the real U-boat experience, then look no further! Don't be afraid to ask.

And don't mind Blitzkrieg. He is a disciplinarian, and reminds me of "number 1" from Das Boot, but he is the man to talk to about this game. He knows his stuff! Thank you Blitzkrieg for all you do to make this game awesome. See you in Reich school!

Default GWX MEGAMOD CANT INSTALL

I hit the executable (after downloading it and putting them all in one folder like the instructions said) but it almost immediately asks for disk 7 which I do not have as I downloaded the game from Steam. How do I get GWX Mega Mod over Steam install?
cheers
John

Did you get the download from the Bonus Mods area? You can find the link in this thread: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...71&postcount=1

There should be 8 files:
GWX3.exe and GWX3-1.bin ... GWX3-7.bin.
Did you grab all the files?

That message sounds like it's looking for GWX3-7.bin.

Default YUP THAT WAS IT BUT OTHER PROBS

some how didn't download 7. did and game runs but questions:
1. It only seems to run at some resolutions and I have to change my win10 display resolution to match it every time?
2. Game crashed 2x. Once on loading a mission and once when I clocked "surface cruise mode."
3. alarm bell seems to stay on long after "crash dive" order over.

Help?

Not sure on those. What graphics card are you using and are your drivers up-to-date? Some graphics cards may have trouble switching between different aspect ratios and resolutions on the fly, but I haven't heard of that being a major issue. Are you using widescreen settings or just the default GWX install (4:3 aspect ratio)? My GWX install is modded beyond GWX using a widescreen UI so I don't have your same configuration but I'm running Win 10 as well with no major problems. When the game crashes, is it to the desktop or bluescreen?

Drivers are up-to-date for my NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 295. It crashes back to Steam app.

Not sure what to say about that. Next time the game crashes, check the windows event viewer for errors. It may not give us any useful information, but that's the next step I'd try in the troubleshooting process.

Also try setting compatibility mode to Windows XP SP2. That's cleared up some crashes that I have when loading careers.
