Default SH5 Returning "Newbie"

Hi All, Purchased SH5 a while ago at release and now trying to come back to it, used to play SH3 but never tried SH4 - slightly overwhelmed with all the mods - I`d like to play in a non-Hardcore way, is this possible in SH5 vanilla with official patches or is there too many game breakers in there - Read a lot about the Wolves Mod, but it sounds a little too hardcore for me in terms of targeting and other fully simulated aspects of the game, don't get me wrong I don't want an arcade game

Hope you can help point me in the right direction, or should I be looking at vanilla SH4 instead?

Thanks all

Playing stock is something you can do, see how long you last though! Seriously, stock is a mess and it will never be any different. Only mods and the community behind them has saved this game from sinking into it's own Davey Jones' locker. When it comes to mods and putting them together, unless you know and understand the file structure and be able to read between the lines of all those conflict reports in JSGME, you're going to have a frustrating time. So many mods conflict with each other that you'll spend more time troubleshooting and reading threads here than actually playing the game, and that's no fun, well for some it is or we'd all be still stuck with stock!

I would really recommend playing The Wolves of Steel mod pack. Yes it is slightly hardcore and a while ago the idea of no map contacts, no icons and no way to see for definite where the hell I was I found really off-putting, even daunting. But, after coming back to SH5 after a long time and seeing the progress made and the updates to mods I used to use I remembered how painstaking it was to get my mod soup to work the first time around and realized it would be far easier to learn a slightly more hardcore way of playing, so I installed TWoS and haven't looked back, I'm on 100% realism with real navigation now and it's a blast, in fact I get a much better feeling sinking a ship knowing that I made every step myself without UI elements 'molly coddling' me.

I'd say give it a go, the Real Nav is optional in the package and there's the Wind and Smoke addon in there to give you back the Identify Ship icon, so you don't have to thumb through the rec manual every time. If you decide you don't like it, then a couple of hours reading through the forums will give you a good idea of what works together and what doesn't, but personally I believe you won't get that far, TWoS isn't as daunting as you, or I at one time, thought.

Good luck.

Is this something you can turn off or change? I know this is something real, although not everyone loves this 'feature'. I'm not an SH 5 expert, and this above causing many problems.

The Wolves Of Steel (TWOS) mega mod can be initially set up from the main menu selecting new campaign and then choosing the realism setting that suits your game play.
You can then further customize by using options from the main menu and selecting the game play settings.

The addon on Wind and Smoke mod will also help those who want the target identified and to see the torpedo depth diagram to the targets hull as well as other things etc.

If you are looking for Auto TDC then this is mega mod is really not different from anything else you might try it only becomes more difficult when using manual TDC.

Without the real navigation mod you can see the contacts on the map but the latest patch has made it more difficult by removing the contacts colors, and there are no tails to show you the direction. This may or may not cause a problem depending on your gaming skills, so it is just a case of using the map tool to draw it out the contacts course.
If you use a setting in TDW's Options File Editor Viewer (OFEV) then you will be able to see the contacts course as well as other information.

There are many settings in the OFEV that can be saved for on going game play as well as the Nav and TAI settings that can be changed in game for that gaming session that can help.
For the less experience gamer the parallel and intercept buttons will be of interest.

The one thing that TWOS will give every gamer is a rock solid game free of ctd's.
