Mission Editor Dates Question

I've been trying to set up a simple mission and eventually succeeded but only after keeping failing mission validation for date problems.

Can someone please explain to me the difference between mission start date, ship or U-boat game entry and exit dates, dates for ships which are convoy leaders (a group I set up would not accept some ships as their dates were after that of the convoy leader) etc.
