Default Mine laying Mod?

Hello fellow Kaleuns,
the following page on Uboat.net brought an interesting thing to light:
http://www.uboat.net/allies/merchants/ships/282.html

Apparently the British steam merchant Cato was struck and sunk by a mine laid by U-29. So ... some Uboats had mine-laying abilities?!

Anyhow, with that come to light, I was wondering if there have been any mods released that add this to SH3. To be honest, I seriously doubt it, but you never know. So, anyone heard of anything in this department?

CB along while ago made a mine layer mod, however, it does not appear to be in SH3 Download section. The link to his old site http://www.ebort2.co.uk/files/sh3mines.zip no longer works.

Good Hunting,

There were dedicated minelayers such as the VIID or XB types and in addition to that the ability to deploy mines from the torpedo tubes was a standard feature for most u-boat. During WW1 dedicated minelayers played a much greater part in the campaign, but even in WW2 mines were still used.

What a coincidence! I have just finished making a Revell Type VII D minelayer U-Boat. Until I bought this kit, I didn't realize that either!

There is sort of a mine laying option in stock:

Which boat was it that had the side mounted torpedo tubes up by the Conning Tower?

I'm thinking it was a T- or U-Class boat. A Royal Navy one... There's been some interesting sub designs over the years...

Yep, U-boat minelaying missions were quite common in both World Wars. I've been putting together a spreadsheet with a list of U-boat special operations undertaken during WWII, and it's incredible just how many minelaying missions there were. It's really one of the last great un-explored areas of the U-boat war in terms of the SH series and dynamic campaigns of most major mods. There's a lot of potential for hair-raising harbor infiltrations there...

During WW1 nearly one third of the u-boats built were dedicated minelayers of the UC and UE series and some of them racked up quite a lot of tonnage, such as UC-17 with 144,423 tons (though a fair bit was achieved with guns and torpedoes). Quite likely it was a lot easier to get close to ports back then, as ASW had to be invented from scratch. Mines were however also extensively used for ASW and with quite devastating effect.

Here's the link to the spreadsheet I was working on. I never found the time to finish it, but you'll see there are 119 "special missions" with various levels of detail.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

Hopefully someone can make use of the data.
