I don't see what's so amazing about this. Humans are usually downplaying animal intelligence out of species conceit.

Have you ever had a cat play a trick on you? My late friend Rocky had a cat he called Lucretia McBlackCat after the old Blood, Sweat & Tears song 'Lucretia McEvil". When Lucy was very young she once needed rescuing from the roof. Rocky's oldest son John got out a ladder and got poor little Lucy down safely. By the time John had put the ladder away Lucy had climbed up the tree by the front porch and made the little leap to the roof, and was passionately wailing to be rescued again.

The trick she played on me was "dead cat". I was at their house. Rocky was in his office getting something to show me when I went to the kitchen for a soda. Upon returning to the living room I found Lucy lying on the floor, legs outstretched, eyes half open and tongue hanging out, looking very dead. I said "Lucy?" She didn't move. I touched her to feel if she was warm or cold, and only then did her tail twitch just a tiny bit. I started to pet her and she sat up, perfectly normal. As I sat on the couch she lay back down in exactly the same position. When Rocky came back he took one look at her and said "Oh. She's playing 'dead cat' again. She started doing that just a couple of days ago. Got all of us at least once."

I've met some cats that I would describe as "dumb as a fence", but this one knew what a dead cat looked like, among other things, and figured out how to sucker poor humans into thinking she was indeed deceased.

Funny story. I'm sure most people have similar stories of their dogs, cats and other animals. I have a few myself and I know there are a large number of animal lovers here in the forum and elsewhere. It never ceases to amaze me how many non-animal people consistently downplay the intelligence of animals.

If people who like animals take the time to teach them, animals are very smart. On the other hand, I sometimes wonder who is teaching / training who.

True that
