Barring fuel efficiency. Does it matter what speed your u boat is going on the surface to recharge the electric batteries?
What is most efficient? I am in operatin drumbeat, but aircraft are destroying me bad. I can't dive soon enough, never see them until they are seconds from bombing. So I have to spend a l of time underwater I just want to know which would be best, for my survival. To minimize the amount of time at surface In this area |

How you supposed to shake these aircraft anyway?
Heavy bombers, dive bombers, all sorts of planes coming every day and night, is there any use changing direction or trying to move faster? Also what sped should I set myself while underwater for such a problem that I am having? Should I go standard or lower |

I have found that setting speed at 1kt when running submerged during the day provides the best results in maintaining a battery charge. Surface at night to recharge, and run decks awash during the early morning/late evening to help keep things charged and running smoothly. It takes forever to get anywhere when going that slow during the day, but you can usually make up for it by doing a "sprint" at night while charging batteries.

The starboard engine that's offline charging batteries always runs at the same speed, equivalent to flank speed whatever speed the boat's doing at the time. Check out the rev counters in the control room, to the left of the planesmen. External view shows the starboard screw stopped, but in RL, certainly in later boats, the generator ran the starboard electric motor also, reducing the amount of port helm needed to maintain a straight course. A large rudder angle creates a lot of drag, reducing speed quite a lot.
The crippled Bismarck was forced to run on two of three screws at different speeds, with the rudders jammed 12 degrees to port, and maximum speed was reduced to 10 knots.
