He was a fabulous bridge player!-(one of my college sports) What a way to escape (heart attack); he been diagnosed with Alzheimer's in May 2015. Sharif once ranked among the world's top 50 contract bridge players, and played in an exhibition match before the Shah of Iran. Sharif co-wrote a syndicated newspaper bridge column for the Chicago Tribune for several years, He was also both author and co-author of several books on bridge and licensed his name to a bridge video game; initially released in 1992, Omar Sharif on Bridge is still sold in Windows and mobile platform versions. His last movie role was in 2013; he was at it till the end. A man of talent! He will be missed.

I certainly saw "Doctor Szivago" and "Lawrence of Arabia", but for me Sharif will always be Captain Nemo in the german six-parts TV series "The mysterious island".
(It HAD to have something to do with submarines, you know )

Hmm, I didn't know bridge was a sport. When was the last time a bridge player was told to "hit the shower"?...


Omar Sharif was one of those great international actors whole could seemingly play any role of any nationality. Like Yul Brenner and Anthony Quinn, he could morph into a character and not only play the role exceedingly well, but do so effortlessly...

In the late 70s, I was working in a law firm in Beverly Hills and would often take walks down Wilshire Blvd. during lunch hour. One day, I was passing by the very ritzy Beverly Wilshire Hotel and I noticed a gaggle of 8 to 10 middle-aged women gazing up at a window on about the third or fourth floor. There, leaning out the window, very relaxed, was Omar Sharif, exchanging pleasantries with the women below who were very thrilled to see and speak with Omar. When I got back to the office, I told some of the other staff about what I had seen and an attorney who handled entertainment law said Omar had a long-term lease on a suite in the very expensive hotel. The suite was held open for him and him alone so he had a place to stay while in Los Angeles. Now that is a lifestyle of the rich and famous...

RIP, Omar Sharif, thank you for all the great films and moments...

It just goes to show that we all grow old and die eventually.

Though Dick Clark challenged that notion for many years, he still succumbed.
