The title says it all. I've read in the LWAMI manual that lowering torp speeds greatly improves the stealth value of those torps. (and I would assume that means the torp can get closer to the target before the target is aware)
However, I have yet to see this actually work against AI units. Or is this an online thing only??? |

Just because it makes it quieter doesn't mean the torpedo is going to drop off the sonar completely (I don't mean to condescend if you realized this). The AI probably doesn't have something like this modeled, but a quieter torpedo could easily get lost in the broadband sonar. For me, personally, I prefer running full speed torpedoes. A slower torpedo has more potential to be evaded.

no condescension taken. I kind of agree. Full speed ahead but I'd like other opinions, etc....

Launching them on the opposite side of the layer, if the bottom depth is permitting? Only when they reach the RTE length should they activate search mode and change to the set search depth. So it will then cross the layer.
Dr. Sids testing of sound layer effectiveness on sonar sensor detection suggested that the layer cannot prevent detection by sensors within a certain distance, iirc about 5 nm. So if the torpedo comes that close the target will likely notice the torpedo heading for it. But this is probably much closer than the no-escape range so it will likely be toast anyway.
